Praising doctors to Yoga Day, Mann ki Baat high on health

After comments abroad that caused outrage among doctors, PM tries to make up

Prime minister Narendra Modi praises doctors in his weekly Mann ki Baat programme on Sunday. He also spoke about the celebrations of the fourth International Day of Yoga the world over.

With an eye on the upcoming Doctors’ Day on July 1 and also perhaps to pacifying the community that he had enraged by his references to the doctor-Pharma nexus in London, Modi was effusive. He said: “Indian doctors have carved a niche for themselves in the entire world through their capabilities and skills. Our doctors have gained recognition for their expertise in the medical field, hardworking attitude and the ability to solve complex medical problems. Through Mann Ki Baat I extend my warmest felicitations on behalf of the countrymen to all our doctors, ahead of Doctor’s Day on the 1st of July.”

” “Indian doctors have carved a niche for themselves in the entire world through their capabilities and skills.”

In London during an interaction Modi had commented about the unethical practices in the medical community earning the wrath of doctors and the criticism of the Indian Medical Association. The prime minister also lauded the success of the Jan Ausadhi Scheme that aims to provide low cost generic drugs to the poor. He also congratulated the government on the successful implementation of GST.

On the Yoga Day celebrations, the prime minister said: “My dear countrymen, this 21st of June, the fourth Yoga Day presented the rarest of sights. The whole world appeared as one entity. In the European Parliament in Brussels, at the UN headquarters in New York, on Japanese naval warships, there were sights of people performing yoga. Saudi Arabia witnessed its first, historic yoga programme and I am told many aasans were demonstrated by women. On the snow capped mountain peaks of Ladakh, Indian and Chinese soldiers performed yoga in unison. Yoga breaks all barriers of borders and unites people.”
