Health minister Dr Harsh Vardhan has urged striking doctors to end their stir

Health minister Dr Harsh Vardhan has urged striking doctors to return to work and also appealed to West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee to withdraw her ultimatum to the doctors.

Taking to the microblogging site Twitter, he wrote: “I urge doctors to end their strike in the larger interest of society. I will take all possible measures to ensure a safe environment for them at hospitals across the country. I’ll write to all states where such incidents have occurred & ensure safe working conditions for doctors. I feel very sad that doctors across India had to strike work in protest against atrocities on doctors in W Bengal & consequently patients across India are suffering. I appeal to @Mamtaofficial to withdraw her ultimatum to the medical community & not make this a prestige issue.”

“I urge doctors to end their strike in the larger interest of society. I will take all possible measures to ensure a safe environment for them at hospitals across the country.”

What began as a doctors strike in NRS Hospital in Kolkata has since become an unrest among softies across the state and now across the country. There have been mass resignations in several West Bengal hospitals. On Friday doctors in Delhi hospitals including AIIMS also stopped work in protest. Wearing soiled head bandages they demanded better working conditions for their colleagues across the country.

In a statement, the Indian Medical Association said: “Past few days have seen violence on doctors and hospitals in many states. The gruesome incident in NRS Medical College, Kolkata is of barbaric nature. Dr Paribaha Mukharjee who was brutally attacked is critical and fighting for his life. IMA condemns the violence perpetrated on a young doctor. Entire medical fraternity expresses our solidarity with the Residents who are on strike. Our National President, Dr. Santanu Sen has visited all the medical colleges in Kolkata and has been in touch with the Government and the Police which has led to the arrest of four culprits in this regard. National President Elect Dr.Rajan Sharma and Hony Secretary General, Dr.R.V.Asokan are travelling to Kolkata to identify with the Residents. IMA Hqs hereby declares All India Protest Day on Friday 14.06.2019.”
