The resident doctors went on strike on Thursday alleging assault

After almost two days, resident doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences ended their strike late on Saturday night. The development came after Dr Atul Kumar was removed as the chief of RP Centre the ophthalmology centre of the premier medical institute.

The doctors went on strike after Dr Kumar allegedly slapped one of the residents. Though he has apologised since, a slew of other allegations emerged against him which made the negotiations to end the strike, drag on. Patients were inconvenienced though surgeries happened in AIIMS, including three transplants.

Residents Doctors’ Association chief Harjit Singh Bhati said that Dr Kumar has handed over charge as the chief of R P Centre. There is also a committee probing the allegations.

The allegations against Kumar have in fact escalated since Thursday. In a statement on Friday the RDA brought charges ranging from groping female students to leaking questions of senior residency examinations.
